My systems run remarkably well, and with minimal security, this is how I do it:
I start by opening MSconfig, Add Remove Programs, and other useful applications, and turning off your getting rid of absolutely everything I don't need, or don't need running, by skillfully using google searches on each program. Doing so will get rid of annoying update programs, especially from Dell and companies like it that decide to just bog down your computer at crucial moments to update or download some useless news update that I don't need or want. My computers have no more than 30 processes running at one time, even while playing a game + xfire + ts, this keeps my Memory usage low and my PCU free to run the programs I want to run faster.
I then go about modifying my Power settings to make sure that the computer does not go in to standby and effectively shut down my hard-drive, causing it to reboot and respeed everytime I refresh my screen, I also get rid of Screen Savers, although this uses a lot more electricity it is essential to having great performance on any machine. Power Management on your system is very important to make sure there is enough supply for the demand.
Then I go about getting rid of useless things, like the Themes service which gives all the fancy windows and fading boxes that windows seems to love, doing so saves even more processing speed and RAM, and makes things run faster.
No while these last few things were about speed, Security is rather simple, after learning through past mistakes I've devised my ultimate protection system which has never failed me, and with it plus google you can get rid of any virus you may ever get. First and foremost disable the Windows Firewall, it blocks essential programs from accessing the Internet, even Anti-Virus software. Turn off Security Center as well, get rid of those annoying reminder bubbles. Then get a program like CCleaner, CCleaner is a useful tool which deletes all the trash that is left on your PC from the Internet and every day tasks. There could be hundreds of registry errors you are unaware of while you are using your PC, and CCleaner will also warn you of these, and get rid of the bad entries increasing your computers performance and getting rid of useful portals for Viruses to take advantage of.
for an Anti-Virus software, I highly recommend Avast Antivirus, Avast is one of the best Anti-Virus programs I have ever used, and I don't plan on switching in the future. Free to Download, free to Liscense, works great, and is trust worthy. Avast is useful because it has constant scanning going which scans every connection, file, or other task happening on the PC, and when it spots something suspicious it warns you with a lovely siren and gives you options as to how to proceed (The best being to chest the item, especially if your not in Safe-Mode). It updates regularly, and it catches a lot.
Last but not least, GET RID OF INTERNET EXPLORER, this is one of the most important things you will ever do, Internet Explorer for Windows is like the all access pass to your PC, download and install a more secure Web Browser like Mozilla Firefox.
