Battlefield Modding Tutorials BFMODS

Ok, someone straighten this out for me. Why am i logging on to some modded servers perfectly fine without having to change client files? I don't really understand it, how is it possible for me to mod a map, but still have everyone be able to log on like normal? Sorry for such a stupid question, but I don't understand why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Thanks

Some things are server side others aren't.

Everything in the tutorials and most of what is found in the tutorials forums.

What generally can not be done:
graphics changes
new objects
static objects addition/removal
important-variable changes (mass, etc)
