ffdshow is included in K-Lite Codec pack, never had problems with it

It's too excessive in my opinion, it installs too many things in too many places. Plus you can't guarantee that's the newest build of ffdshow.

VLC keeps its codecs local. I never use any other media players (except iTunes for music, but that's just MP3/AAC) so it doesn't need to be installed system-wide.
