Well for Playstation 3 Owners like myself, the anticipated release of Drakes Uncharted 2 in a few days is humbling news enough. What we never saw coming was that the company behind it all, Naughty Dog, would see fit to release to the public a free multiplayer demo. With story games like this one it is always skeptical as to whether the games Multiplayer will live up to all of the thrill its excellent story will most definitely deliver. Needless to say, Drakes Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is no let down.
Its Multiplayer component is amazing. Not only have naughty dog succeeded in bringing the best features of the Single player campaign from the first game into the multiplayer, but dear I say it: It is fun as hell! The cover system is seemless, the graphics beautiful, and the gameplay rock solid. Whether your climbing a wall to reach a sniper position, or charging head long across the map with assault rifle in hand, the game is satisfying in all respects. Despite the low player numbers of the somewhat unknown demo, the games that you get to experience are amazing.
Each match is heart pounding, especially when enjoying the best game type: Plunder. Plunder is CTF for you BF1942 crowd, except you have to capture a Golden Idol that weighs more than yourself. When carrying the idol you have one of two choices, run slowly back to your base and place it in the box, or toss it back and forth between you or your teammates to move it across the board. The cap usually consists of aiming a throw up onto a balcony, before ascending with the climb mechanics to the boxes location. The extra challenge of that well aimed throw makes this CTF not only heart pounding, but extremely difficult. It is easily one of the best CTF game modes I have ever seen in a game.
Along with an excellent CTF mode, Naughty Dog also included Deathmatch, Conquest, and two Co-Op modes with the demo, with a nice note "There will be more!". The Co-Op shines particularly, I look forward to playing the entire Co-Op game with my friends, and having a blast. More importantly however, is the Gold Rush game mode. Much like CTF, Gold Rush pits you and 3 or more of your friends against hordes of enemies in ever increasing difficulty. You have to shuttle the Golden Idol from its starting location to its box (usually located on the other end of the map) whilst wading through the waves of enemies that spawn to stop you. By Round 5 there is no cake walk anymore, as enemies come at you in full force, Strangling You, Sniping You, massing in invincible Riot shield groups, and eventually heavily armored Gatling Gunners drop down from the roof tops to put thousands of rounds into you and your friends. Not only is this fun, but you gain Experience towards your rank as well, making it rewarding to enjoy the Co-Op. In-fact the only bad part of this Multiplayer Component is the Hand To Hand combat, which is clunky and annoying at best.
Compound this with a ranking system, unlockable player models, and plenty of upgrades to buy tt is truly something amazing, and will be a must buy for any PS3 owner this fall. October 13th, the Adventure Begins.
