I did some research into this (just a little)..and found something.
Its essentially a DoS attack..sending just enough info for the server to deny letting new players in. Is this legal?

Hello everyone...... My Username in here is SBD but my game name is =OMG=MrB2u. I run =OMG=Ol' Men w/Guns server. About a month ago our server was attacked by a what is referred to as a Fake player bug. We know who has done this but we can't get to him. We have banned him from the server and it will be cold day in hell before I let him back in. When you try to enter the server you get an error message that says "Failed to connect to Server! Server is full! When in fact it is empty. I have researched this and it seems that EA and Gamespy has known about this since 2002 and havent done anything about making a fix. From what I see it affects about 60 online multi player games built on same game engine Bf1942 is built on. My server Company LeagueServers.com set me up another game but it got hacked too, they are currently looking for a patch for this. I dont know if this is the same thing but a TMP server always has 8 player showing, but u get in there and its empty. Really freaking annoying |

I was not aware you could do this in BF1942's engine, other engines sure, but not 1942. Interesting. No idea for a fix though. |

technically Iced any hack modifying a copy writed peice of software is illegal. |

No mean...isn't this essentially a denial of service attack? Isn't there some pretty big consequences for something like that? lol |
