Another hopeless argument over the quality of todays next gen systems. Yes, thats what to call it, the endless struggle to decide, just which is better? The 360 or the PS3.
After long hours of arguing with people over the quality of both systems, I've had it...I must post a full length post, someplace, somewhere, releasing my spleen on the subject.
First off, lets get things straight here, Game companys do not release 2 versions of one game, they release the same version, with the same grafics, and gameplay as the other, just with different controls. Everybody remember Gametrailers video about the "True" comparison in graphics capabilities. Well unfortunately this video is totally wrong, the PS3 used in the videos, those of oblivion and call of duty 3, is not properly adjusted. Its Full RGB Range and Pure White HDMI are not enabled, giving the PS3 in their videos a rather horrible look. After months of watching people argue with eachother over that video, It's about time someone steps in and says, hold on a moment! Look people, niether console looks better...the games are shipped with the same graphics, it'll display correctly no matter what you do.
Next, the price. Everybody argues over price...who gives a shit? Its a preference of games, naturally not being a Halo fan, I went and bought my PS3, and I love it, a great home entertainment system for all of us to share. So the 360's console is cheaper...but don't forget the hard drive, and wireless adapter, and that extra battery back and controller. And now, with blue-ray dominating, if you want the 360 blue-ray player, your gunna pay a pretty penny. Im not biased on either console, but when I went into a gamestop and crunched numbers with a calculator under the counter, its true, the ps3 rang up cheaper. But as I said, it comes down to game preference.
Both consoles are modifyable, PS3 has better modification as far as hard-drives are going, the 360's is easy to remove, and the new 120 gb hard-drive looks nice, but you can buy a standard HDD for a pc, and hook it up to your ps3, giving multiple ps3 owners 300+ GB of space on their PS3's. Mine personally is only 80gb's but I dont see myself running out of space anytime soon.
And if were going to talk about space, lets talk about disc size, because when it comes down to it, how much a company can cram onto the disk, is what will define the quality of the game. the HD disk used with Xbox 360 is around 15 GB, not bad for a standard HD disk, but PS3 has em leading with a 50 GB blue-ray disk, thats alot more space for a dedicated PS3 developer to make alot of content.
If games is where its at, well, I say go with either console. The deciding factor for anybody will be older games for 360 that came out before PS3 was even a reality. Gears of War, Halo, etc. Personally, I don't like halo, and I can still buy a good range of titles for my PS3, including COD4, Time Crisis 4, Oblivion, Orange Box, just to name a few. If your deciding on a console, think of the games you like, not what they may look like. Because honestly, they look exactly the same, no lies. But if your a Halo fan, buy a 360.
As far as online is concerned. Xbox Live does have better connections I will admit that, but I only see the $50 a year as a gimic for the fine people at Micro$oft to get into your pockets. Your not paying for the connection to Xbox Live, your paying for some of the useless features. I like Lives friends list a bit better, but PS3 has one too, and it works rather well for me. One of the deciding factors when I went to buy a console was what I'd have to pay for online, PS3 drew my eye, because unless im a dedicated fan of a MMORPG, i dont want to be paying a yearly or monthly wage just to have fun with my friends. Yes the connections are a little sloppy at times, but the recent updates to the PS3 store, and the free to play online of the PS3, have me convinced that things can only get better. And besides, both consoles have COD4, possibly the number 1 game in the world right now.
When it comes to framerates, and sheer power, the PS3 wins on alot of fronts, its processing core, running 8 processors at 3.2ghz each, and just the right amount of RAM for the system, have it running at frame rates a slight higher than 360's. I will say this, just like any good computer, it doesnt run at its peek till its truly tested, I believe once PS3's system starts getting challenged with bigger and better things, its power will truly be shown, right now, I don't see any game out, that really challenges the systems capabilities as a console.
Another key factor in the choice for anybody, is, backwards compatability, can I still play my old games on it? While xbox I heard has limited support for its older games, PS3 has full support for all PS1 and PS2 games, which makes my hefty collection of sony playstation titles all the more worth it in the end.
As far as controlers go, I will say that the 360's size is much more comfortable than the tiny PS3 controller, however the design of the xbox's controller has me constantly hitting the big X in the middle. The lower analog stick when pushed up and to the left, puts your thumb dead center on that X, that brings up the Live menu, and while playing Halo 3 at a party, I constantly hit the button. Ps3's home button is much smaller and out of reach of the analog stick, I've yet to hit it while playing. The 360 also required a battery pack, that had to be removed and then charged. I like the built in battery of my PS3, I can play while charging, and it only takes 15 minutes, and itll last for 30 hours. And with a good 50 ft range I can sit back and relax at any location, even blind fire from the other room xD.
This also brings up attachments, headsets what not, I believe that PS3's bluetooth is much better than 360's, and the 360 headset was nice, but the chord got me all tangled up in my controller, and I often pulled it out while playing. The wireless bluetooth headsets for ps3 are nice, And fit well on the ear. sound quality is good, if you spend the money, my $40 headset isnt all that great, but its easy to use, I like that. The PS3 also has slots for memory cards, SD's and mini-sd's from cell phones, cameras, and Mp3 players, allowing for transfer of data to be easy, you can even attach files in messages to your friends. and the 4 USB ports on the front, as opposed to the back and one in the front on the 360, make easy use of such items. Video quality is good, Music quality is nice, and I like the controlable visual players of the PS3, make the song my own. While 360 has the feature to listen to music in game, and PS3 doesnt, i'll keep praying the software reachs that stage eventually. No upscaler chip though puts the PS3 at a disadvantage, old games and movies wont upscale to HD resolutions with pixelating, hopefully Firmware can fix that.
All In all im sick of this argument, and I believe both consoles are great, and ultimately its what you require it for. In my case, my mother wanted the console to be useful to her as well, its card slots, and plentiful usb ports make it good for her to use with music and photos. We plan to use it at my grandmothers 70th birthday to play a video we are producing. The 360 didnt offer much for me, the games I didnt really like, and the yearly fee turned me away. But if halo and gears of war are your cup of tea, and your happy with the 50 dollars a year, go with it. Niether console wins, Xbox has the fans, PS3 has the guts, who will win? Only time will tell.
