Thanks Bensta and mrhowdoimod.

So I converted the entire plane to an editable mesh. This was the only way I could be sure all the polygons were selected.

Then I tried two things. Firstly I tried to select the Polygons to detach in perspective mode and each time I selected the polygon and then group menu to hit detach it was always greyed out.

So then I decided to isolate various parts of the gun model to detach same as above and had the command greyed out again.

I will show some examples of what I am trying to do:

Plane:


Gunner unit that i want to make into a separate PCO:


Gunner unit attached to fuselage


So note: I cannot select all of the gun at one time. I dont understand why not. If I go as an editable mesh and select poly I can individually select many but not all the polys. Thats why I isolated it so that I could see what Im getting - but as you can see not all the gun is there and its attached to the fuselage.

Im a novice with max, and am going through tutorials but Microsoft have a hell of a lot of meshes just in the gun itself.

I know I can select meshes by name, but if I did that how do i know whether i have selected all of the meshes for the gun. I believe i can rename it as an object and then perhaps go through and try the detach command which wasnt working before.

no reason to isolate. just click and drag over the elements. don't do it by poly. if you send me the file through xfire or post it here I can do it if you want. it's pretty simple. it's also a pretty cool plane.
