If I can code a intermediary .exe that asks a ftp site to auto download from battlefield 1942 b4 it exits and says no map found, then we wont have to worry about ssm anymore, like cs. What do you guys think of that?

That would be the coolest thing ever if you could pull it off. I don't have the skill to do it myself (I think) but i posted a few days ago my comments on how i would think it would need to operate here.

I think it was tried for BF2 also, but it failed because nobody wanted to download the tool.

Well think of a virus, some can automatically download with you knowing. When you connect to a server a request is sent to server to see if it is running or whatever else it does. It then begins to load the game with whatever files are installed on the clients computer. At the stage where you attempt to connect, the server has to send back a signal saying its working, if it could also at this point work out what files you have on your computer and send the request to download them if needed then these would be installed before the game files actually start to load.

Do it serverside and it will work.
If you have to download something, nothing will work.
It's that simple.
Most players are lazy and know nothing about where files should go.

this feature makes and breaks a game from being a good game great. Its pretty sad that EA trys to make bf series mod friendly, yet they keep on making the game server sided. Only if all games were like css (or any valve game) or using the quake3 engine, or UT...only if

Even though everything I do is still 99% server-sided scripting, the more powerful engine allows me to do anything I could ever want to do.
