Okay im still dead in the skin wrapping area but I was just pondering about this

when I made my paintball field model I got lazy and sais to myself I sais ,HEY!,im way to lazy to position 100 freaking bunkers ,so I combined some bunkers and actually just made them one model,but it was still a paint in the ass so I said OKAY why don't I just make the entire field 1 big ass model that way I could just sue 3dsmax to tweak my positions quickly and easily with just a touch of my mouse and NO numberrrss,so I did that I made my entire field 1 object and it seems to run phenomenally on the server so I wonder does making large model or one one with many pieces like a city or something ,making it one object will help the performance of the game? because it only has to render basically 1 object or will it hurt performance because it has to render such a large object??

i dont think the objects matter, just the polygons...of which there doesn't appear to be a ton of..

Object size is not what the game could lag over. it's complexity and the amount of textures + size of textures. Since what you have up there doesn't seem to have a lot of polys to it, the game should handle it just fine. FYI, the sky box is the largest mesh in the game. Try importing one of those suckers in 3DS Max. It shows that it doesn't matter how "large" the object is. Physical size means nothing in the virtual world!


If however you had the idea of trying to convert terrain to meshes...forget about it! If you convert a typical height map into a mesh (yes there is a tool that will do this!) that mesh will have so many polys to it that your game will run at like 1fps the moment the mesh comes into view. :P

no no im sot trying to do that although I did kinda do that in this map the ground is mesh but only were the field is and its just risen like a inch off the ground
