Firefox needs 75MB? Interesting. I always thought Firefox was way slimmer than Opera in its "needs", as Opera has much more stuff built in (torrent, mail, feeds, widgets: all-in-one) and opera only needs 50-60MB, depending on number of tabs open, whereis 60MB with ~10 Tabs. I also use google as standard search engine, it simply is the best. But I'm no fan of protocoling my searches . I also use social networks (especially on university now it's very helpful to get in touch with the guys studying the same stuff you do). But pretty much only for establishing communication, then I switch to IMs via Trillian (ICQ/MSN/AIM in one). The only info I give are my name, the stuff I do at the university and that's it. I don't use it to search for friends or groups or whatever. Might be missing something, but I do fine without . |

I use AIM through Xfire to talk to a few of my friends from high school, but I would never put all my personal information online. I just checked, Chrome uses 22MB with 2 tabs open, and I rarely have more open than that. And W2K, I also have 2GB of RAM but I like to keep it around just in case, I generally have WinRFA, a few folders, 3dsmax, and Musicmatch Jukebox open most of the time, plus bf42 for a few hour long chunks of time. |

Just in case of what? In a case that a giant RAM-eating monster would come and eat all your RAM? Why do you have it when you don't need it? |

I do need it, before I bought it (my pc had 512mb) my computer was nearly unusable cause it was so incredibly slow. It took 5 minutes to fully log in, windows explorer would often crash, I would take 5-15 minutes to load a bf1942 map, all kinds of terrible things. I may occasionally use about half of it with many applications open now, my point is why use it all up if you don't need to? The biggest draw for me is that Chrome opens and loads pages at least twice as fast as IE did on the same internet connection. It's also layed about alot better in my opinion. And yes twist there are RAM-eating monsters lurking behind every corner. |

What?? RAM doesn't disappear. That's what I'm getting of what you are saying... Technically you can't "Use it all up". You just can max it out.. |

Yup. You can max your RAM out, but as soon as you close an application, the RAM will be free again for another app. And there are only few programs that really max out RAM on modern PCs, as they have at least 2GB RAM and most apps start bypassing to Virtual RAM before they hit max to guarantee smooth, but maybe slower system operability instead of an "overload". |
