Question...

A lot of servers have the name "Player" disallowed (you get kicked after u join for "banned word in player name"). I thought this was silly, until more people started using the name, and a lot to be smacktards. At this point I thought it best to add it to the ban list in BFRM, but it requires at least a name & keyhash, PB guid or IP address. I added "Player" to the banned word list (2 times = you're out), and this kicks players with the name "player" with the result seen on other servers...but is this really the right/best way to do it?

I fail to see what the harm is in having people join your server named "Player". Isn't the objective of running a server to have as many people on it as possible? :?

Thats exactly what I thought. ...until people named 'Player' came on and started TKing. At least when they use a different name, you can keep track of them.

I really don't see anything wrong with it and seems to work, so why worry? It's a bit ridicules that people leave their name as "PLAYER" anyways. no offense PLAYER!

I've seen several on my EUSF server at once. Very annoying.

90% of the time, players with the name "Player" are either total noobs or will end-up doing something that will brake the server rules. So I don't think there's anything wrong with banning that player name from the server. Since if it's a serious player that won't be a smacktard/tker, then they will just change their player name and comeback. All others that would have joined the server to disrupt game play will most likely find a different server to do it on.

Yes that's the idea, they are noobs and might not understand how the game works and could cause a problem with disruptive gameplay. It can also be difficult if several players come in with the same name, and admins have to coordinate to kick the proper person.

This is not as much of an issue in BF now, since the game is not gaining tons of new players each day. In other games like Cod4/5, it is an issue and servers tend to auto-rename players to something other than "Unknown Soldier" in order to differentiate them. Of course, in BF, we can not rename players at our will.
