If I run out of ammo in my P90 I'll beat you over the head with it. If you do that with a paintball gun the barrel will snap off.
Let's compare-
Rate of Fire- Airsoft (full auto paintball guns are not as common, plus RoF for normal AEG is ~900 rounds per minute)
Ammo capacity- Airsoft
Pain- equal (depends on type of gun and power upgrades for both)
Range- airsoft
Accuracy- Airsoft
Durability- Airsoft (unless the gun is all plastic - most are mainly metal anymore)
Price(gun only)- paintball (good marker- ~ $100-200, good METAL AEG- ~$260- >$400)
Price(ammo)- Airsoft, 4,000 .2g BB's- $17, paintballs...way to much for less
Realism- Airsoft! (this is the whole point of it btw(the other things are added advantages))
So, airsoft wins. And it's bigger worldwide. In the U.S. there are more paintballers but in the rest of the world airsoft is much more popular (mostly cause they generally can't own real weapons-realism factor again)

I've been shot multiple times with a tippman 98 custom all at once when my Marui M4 ran dry and I was defenseless. I had the bruises for 3 months. I'm not sure I want to play paintball again. I was using an AEG cause it's all I had at the time, I beat the 98 custom kid when I borrowed my friend's MR1 that he converted to a sniper rifle, with a 20" barrel and a full stock. Looked alot like a G3A3.
