That's just common usage.

It's simple really:

1 byte = 8 bits

When abbreviated, a bit is done with a lowercase b and a byte is represented by an uppercase B.

When you get to higher units, such as kilobyte or megabit, you simply apply the proper prefix. Of course, this is where there is a bit of debate over the use of 2^x or 10^x. Some people claim that a kilobyte is 1000 bytes, and some claim that it is 1024 bytes. So is it 2^10 or 10^3?

That's why on television ads for Dell or something, they explicitly say how a Gigabyte is defined as 1,000,000,000 bytes. They explicitly tell you which one they use.

Of course, neither stems from bite/byte debate. It's just that transfer rates always used to be given in bits (e.g. a 56k modem is 56 kiloBITS per second maximum). I do not remember why this was started, but it's just an industry standard. And also why people get confused why their 2mbit Comcast Cable connection can not download at 2MB/sec.

PC format is useless.

Try to format with an Amiga computer 2mb disk becomes 1.96mb, not 1.44.

you can save some bandwith if you set the server to "modem", but its not very nice to play like that.
